Big cities like New York and San Francisco can take days, even weeks to explore, and are great for long city breaks or repeat visits. But some cities are just small enough to get a taste of in a single day; enough exciting things to do to keep you occupied throughout your time there, but not too many as to overwhelm you. These spots are awesome for a daycation.
A day trip can be a great experience – just the ticket if you feel like a change of scenery, but without having to do too much organization or preparation in advance. So while longer vacations might see you reaching for the cruise packing list tips, these four towns can be explored off the cuff, on a whim, and just because you fancy a day out!

Santa Barbara, California
The laid-back, sleepy vibe of Santa Barbara is like a world away from the bright lights of Tinseltown. The weather is pretty much perfect every day of the year. This picturesque city is located in a gap between the California coast and the Santa Ynez Mountains. And, it makes it a wonderful option for hiking, biking, or watersports on the beach.
Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, New York
On the other side of the country, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are great daycation double-headers just outside New York City. Located on the Hudson River, this is a superb choice for any history buffs. These towns are chock-full of Revolutionary War sites, as well as a few choice literary points of interest as well. So, don’t miss Washington Irving’s house on the Sunnyside estate, or the Captor’s Monument in Patriots’ Park.
Nashville, Tennessee
A famous destination for music lovers and world-renowned venues like the Bluebird Cafe, Nashville is one of the loved destinations in the USA. So, It is definitely a worth visiting city. But now Nashville is more than just its Music City reputation. With an astounding food scene and some superb cultural highlights make it one of the top cities in the USA for a daycation.
Charleston, South Carolina
The elegant sophistication and genteel style of Charleston make it one of the best cities in the US to visit on a day trip. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and boasts stunningly beautiful pre-Civil War architecture as well as a bunch of fantastic historical attractions to visit. It is small enough to walk around, although you might enjoy taking in the cobbled streets of this charming city in luxury and comfort in a horse-drawn carriage instead!
