It’s also home to some of the world’s most wonderful wildlife, delicious cuisine and some of the friendliest people you’ll meet.
This post covers 4 must-do things in South Africa for every traveler. So, check out what not to miss on your first visit to this amazing country.
Check out these four must do things in South Africa!
Table of Contents
1. See the ‘Big 5’ at Kruger National Park
In South Africa, the ‘Big 5’ animals are the leopard, lion, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo̶and you can find them all at the wildlife haven Kruger National Park.
Located in the country’s northeast, around four hours’ drive from Pretoria, this is South Africa’s most exciting safari destination. As well as the majestic aforementioned animals, if you’re lucky you might also spot an elusive cheetah, while there’s every chance you’ll also be woken every morning at your safari lodge accommodation by a tribe of mischievous monkeys! So, visiting Kruger National Park is one of the must-do things in South Africa and should be everyone’s bucket list.

2. Sail to Robben Island
Nestled in Table Bay, some 7km west of Bloubergstrand near Cape Town, Robben Island is the site of the prison where the late, great, Nelson Mandela and many other political prisoners involved in the fight for freedom against Apartheid were imprisoned.
You can sail here on an organized tour from Cape Town and touring the former prison is a humbling experience ̶ you’ll see the cell where the great man was incarcerated and the lime quarries where prisoners were forced to labor in the blazing sun.
If you are someone who loves to sail and also want to experience something unique, you must visit Robben Island. This is certainly one of the must do things in South Africa.

3. Drive the Garden Route
South Africa is a fantastic country to explore by road and the Garden Route is one of the most iconic road trips.
The route stretches 200km around the Western Cape, through picturesque towns and beauty spots like Albertina, George, Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tstisikamma Forest, passing mountains, beaches, coves, bays and towering trees and wildflower meadows. 4. Hike Table Mountain
Table Mountain dominates the Cape Town skyline and it’s one of Africa’s most iconic natural attractions, so one way or another you simply must make it to the top to enjoy the views across the city and out to the coast where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.
The cable car to the summit is regular and efficient but if you’re feeling adventurous (and fit!) you can also hike the entire 1086m elevation. Make sure you have sturdy walking boots and plenty of water, and an organized tour from the likes of local outdoor experts Hike Table Mountain is highly recommended.
As you can see, South Africa offers an outstanding range of eclectic experiences for any traveler, so it definitely deserves a spot on your must-see list of global locations!
